Feeding
Horses are brought in, stalled and fed at least twice a day. We provide Southern States brand of feeds, tailored to your horses needs, and high-quality hay, some of which we grow ourselves. Other feeds are available for horses that may have special needs.
Healthcare
We monitor the horses daily for injuries or illnesses, administers medication, wraps legs, and consults with our veterinarian (or yours), as needed.
Restrictions:
We do not accept ill tempered horses, cribbers, weavers, or violent horses.
TRAILER STORAGE: Our rates for storage are FREE for boarders that board their horses with us and $30/mo for horse folks that need a place to park their trailers locally.
SUPPLEMENTS:
Supplements that need to be given to your horse, owners provide, and Double J Farm staff will administer as directed at no added charge. Or if the owner preferred Double J Farm will purchase the supplement and add to their account for added convenience.
FARRIER:
Our Farrier, Tommy Dotson, falls directly in line with our concepts of treating each horse the natural way. He has even had education in doing what most farriers call the "Natural Trim." Which is best described as putting the horses hooves back in their natural state so that the hooves will give more under pressure and will be less likely to crack or split. Very educated in corrective shoeing and balancing the horse correctly. We have him come out periodically (scheduled 6-8 weeks and any other time on appointment basis) for trimming and shoeing, his rates are reasonable, but please remember that you do not have to use our farrier, you may use whomever you prefer.
VETERINARIAN:
There is an excellent Vet. on call for our farm, (Scarlett Large Animal Vet.) they can make farm calls for vaccinations, emergencies and so forth, they are the best in my opinion, but please do not feel obligated to use them. You may use whomever you prefer.
VACCINES REQUIRED FOR OUR FARM:
We require that all horses have a Negative Coggins, Rabies, Tetanus, EEE/West Nile, Flu/ Rhino, and all other vaccines are optional and at the discretion of the owners.
Conditions for acceptance of boarders:
Because of the fact we live on the property (and this is our HOME not just a barn), we have become very picky on the types of boarders we allow here at our home. We truely enjoy providing these horse related services to people who enjoy their horses! We provide a very laid back, peaceful atmosphere, and most of our boarders agree, that there horses have really improved since they first arrived. We are very laid back and the horses, of course, respond well to that. I am sure that if you have boarded before, you know that all barns have "Barn Rules" we exspect that each boarder be responsible, and follow these simple rules.
We firmly believe horses need a certain standard of care; they need their hooves trimmed on a reasonable schedule. They need their shots and regular deworming. They need exercise and healthy food, grooming, reasonable shelter and a safe environment. Being domesticated they also need a certain amount of attention from their owners (people). However, we also believe HORSES ARE MEANT TO BE HORSES. They can be out in the rain, they won't melt; they do NOT have to be fed at the same exact time every day, on the hour on the minute. Small scratches, squabbles in group turn out, sun fading and being dirty are a healthy and acceptable consequence to being TURNED OUT TO GRAZE. We are willing to work with all owners that show and we are prepared to work with each horse to keep them in top showing condition.
While we provide honest reasonable care, life is not perfect. If things get broken we do our best to fix them as quickly as we can. We do our best to use the common sense and judgment that comes from being around horses all my life, but accidents DO happen.
Horse owners / Boarders should have a certain level of experience, confidence and common sense to allow them to carry out such tasks as; going out in the field and safely retrieving their horse, riding or handling the horse in the company of others, handling their horse safely under normal circumstances, understanding common horse farm etiquette like closing gates/doors, not tying your horse to inappropriate objects, with an inappropriate head stalls etc. If owners show that they are inexperienced to a level that they put themselves, others or other's horses in harm’s way, or do not understand the basics of horse care those boarders may be required to participate in some basic horsemanship lessons.
We look forward to talking with you about your horse care needs and answering any questions you may have.
