Heza is growing like grass

Heza is growing up so fast.  Everyone says that they can tell that he is growing up so quickly.  I can not really tell, I guess it is because we are together all the time.

He has already grown out of one halter and one blanket.  We have begun turning him out in a paddock by himself until he gets big enough to defend himself better.  He seems to really enjoy getting out in the pasture and sunshine.

His manners are coming along well.  He is so cute though, every time that I walk into the stall or pasture,  he nuzzles his nose to my jaw and sniffs me for like 2 or 3 mintues.  I guess he is making sure that I am "mommy".

Update of the little one

I can't believe how big our little one is getting.  Nikki (one of our boarders) was able to get a quick photo of Heza chilling in his stall.

He is so cute and making great progress in health and he is also being taught young.... manners.  Of course he is catching on quickly.

He seems to really enjoy his time in the round pen, I turn him out in there several times a day and now he thinks it's a normal things and we are not getting the amusing shows that we were getting of him running around and acting as if he had not seen the sky in weeks. :)  He seems to enjoy our walks and the afternoons sitting in the yard while he nibbles on grass. (yes we really do that, when time permits)

 More to come.

Heza's Vet Visit

Posted on October 24, 2009 at 10:27 PM Comments comments (0)

So we had the vet some out recently for Heza's check up.. this would have been his first visit with this vet.  I had guessed that he was between 2 and 2 1/2 months old.  We were not sure... although he had papers... the dates were all the same for several horses that were adopted, because they were all born out in the field I guess and they were not sure of the birth dates...

So the vet opened the colts mouth to age him, what she said next just about floored me when I heard it.  She said that he was 6 to 8 WEEKS old. Are you kidding me?  That means that my friend adopted him when he was 2 to 3 weeks old.  Wow ! what a shock, we all thought, it is a wonder that this little one made it.  This tells me a lot about this little ones will to live.

He is such a sweetie and we are looking forward to a great future with him.

What we learn about Heza before we adopted him..

I had a friend that called me and said that she had adopted two stud colts that had been starved and were on their last limb of starvation and headed quickly towards death.  She exspressed that she had had them for about a month and that they were in stable condition but needed good continuous care to make it the rest of the way. She asked me if I would take the colt in and care for him.  Of course I was oblidged to help any way that I could and I always love a good project to work with, and colts are so cute an sweet too.

I also was curious about what had happened in the past to make him this way.  My friend said all that she knew was that they too were starved to death or there was some talk that they had been struck by lightening.... what are the odds that both mothers were struck by lightening?  Anyways, it was a horrible deal, but he looks to be on the right track now.

He is supposed to be arriving tonight to be with us.  I cannot wait.  Being that he is only about 3 months old, he will have to stay in a stall until he is old enough to romp and play outdoors... Although I will be letting him play in the round pen from time to time so he can burn off energy.  I guess the other good thing is that he will be able to see out of his stall and he has other room mates in the barn too.  Jeffrey and I also spoke about putting one of our newly born goats in there with him once he was of age to seperate from the mother.  That way Heza would have a companion to help get him through this hard time in his life.

I went to visit him on Saturday and he is doing well and not as bad as I anticipated.  He deffinatley has a gleam in his eyes and shows that he is a fighter.
